Challenge
The primary challenge was to construct a reliable anti-filtration barrier around a tailings dam to prevent toxic waste materials from contaminating the surrounding environment.
Ground Conditions
The soil at the site consisted of compacted sandy layers and deeper fat clay with low plasticity layers, presenting a great challenge for installation. The maximum value of nSPT blows was 48! The use of Ecoseal sheet piles with integrated gaskets provided a secure seal even in these varied soil conditions.
Solution
Ecoseal vinyl sheet piles were used to construct the walls of the evaporation ponds. The sheet piles were installed to a depth of 16 feet, creating an impermeable barrier that retained the lithium brine within the ponds. The installation process involved driving the sheet piles into the ground using an excavator bucket. In total, 645 800 ft2 of Ecoseal sheet piles were used.
